Optical fiber deployments have traditionally been used for data transmission. However, recent innovations in fiber sensing technology are transforming existing fiber infrastructures into robust, real-time environmental sensors. By continuously analyzing changes in the signal, these systems can detect external influences such as vibrations and identify vehicle movements or acoustic signatures.
In this demonstration, Adtran’s infrastructure monitoring team will showcase a phase OTDR system that expands the role of optical fiber from basic connectivity to comprehensive environmental monitoring. With high accuracy, the system can detect and classify multiple events simultaneously and in real-time – such as wind-induced vibrations, vehicle activity or audio signatures. This technology opens up new opportunities, from security and perimeter monitoring to smart infrastructure applications.
