Jörg-Peter Elbers joins the debate on optical networking’s future at OFC 2025

Rump session will see teams of panelists go head-to-head on the best technologies for an imaginary reboot of global optical infrastructure

  • Speakers: Jörg-Peter Elbers, Adtran; Chris Cole, Coherent Corp.; Katherine Schmidtke, Eribel Systems; Glenn Wellbrock, Verizon; Chris Doerr, Aloe Semiconductors; Tad Hofmeister, Google; Maxim Kushnerov, Huawei; Rebecca Schaevitz, Mixx Technolgies; Polina Bayvel, University College London; Vijay Vusirikala, Arista Networks; Dave Welch, Attotude; Peter Winzer, Nubis Communications
  • Topics: If a global disaster struck and all the optical infrastructure was wiped out, would you rebuild with today’s mainstream technologies?

  • When: Tuesday, April 1, 7:30 p.m. PT
  • Where: OFC, Moscone Center, San Francisco, California, USA https://www.ofcconference.org/en-us/home/

This OFC rump session envisions a world where all fiber infrastructure has vanished, and a team of top optical networking experts must decide how to replace it over a time horizon of 10 years. Should they abandon traditional standards? Would copper have any role at all? Would starting fresh allow for a dramatically more efficient design?

Jörg-Peter Elbers will take part in this spirited debate, where experts will split into teams to argue the best path forward.
